University Information Services (UIS) provides a number services to improve information and infrastructure security, to protect individuals and Institutions across the Collegiate University.

Anti-Virus software (individuals)
All students and staff of the University and Colleges are entitled to a free copy of the McAfee antivirus software. This license can also be freely used on staff home computers.

CamCERT
The Cambridge Computer Emergency Response Team (CamCERT) co-ordinates the response to security incidents across the University of Cambridge. They provide advice, guidance and technical support, drawing upon a wide range of contacts and sources of information. This service is free to all students and staff.

Incident reporting
An IT incident may cover a wide range of activities such as an email you have received inviting you to visit a webpage and disclose your password, a computer behaving unpredictably (for example pop-up windows and software running unexpectedly), or you have noticed the inappropriate use of IT equipment in the University (for example, you are concerned that someone has been downloading/viewing illegal content on the University network). Use the incident reporting form to report an IT incident.

Email (spam) protection
Anti-spam and anti-virus protection for email traffic, provided by the central mail relay ppsw.

Information Services has a license for some Intel Security (McAfee) anti-virus products, which are available free of charge to all students and staff of the University and Colleges. The license also allows for use on home machines. Once installed the products will automatically check for and download new anti-virus definitions daily.

McAfee Endpoint Threat Prevention 10.5 with Adaptive Threat Protection

PLEASE NOTE:

The zip file above contains 2 executable files that MUST be installed in the correct order. Please uninstall any other anti-virus software (including VirusScan 8.8) prior to installing this product.

  1. Install UIS_McAfee_10_5_2.exe - this may take some time as this installs the McAfee Agent, Endpoint Security Platform and Endpoint Security Threat Prevention modules.
  2. Install Adaptive_Threat_Protection_10_5_2_2078.exe to install the ATP add-in.

McAfee VirusScan: 8.8

You should uninstall any previous version of VirusScan if installing the full product or any other antivirus product before installing.

  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 (pre-configured, contains latest patches for VirusScan - will install on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows).
  • NOTE: This version install VSE 8.8 with patch 9 and McAfee agent 5.0.5. Both are required when upgrading to Windows 10 Creator edition (1703). We recommend uninstalling VirusScan 8.8 prior to upgrading Windows, then installing this version.

Windows 10 users, please note:

McAfee Enterprise 8.8 needs Patch 6 at a minimum to make it Windows 10 compatible.

Macs running High Sierra (10.13)

Required Additional Configuration for High Sierra

Due to the increased security in High Sierra there are some additional configuration steps required.

  1. Run the installer from the link above.
  2. It is recommended that unless explicitly required disable the following functionality when prompted during installation:
  • Firewall
  • Web Control
  • Complete the installation.
  • Open McAfee Endpoint Security from /Applications
  • Choose Preferences from the McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac menu.
  • Choose the General pane and click the padlock.
  • When prompted enter a username and password for an administrator level account.
  • Set Threat Prevention to On.
  • When prompted to approve the System Extension signed by McAfee click OK.
  • Open System Preferences from the Applications folder and choose the Security & Privacy pane.
  • Click Allow if the Mac reports "System software from developer McAfee, Inc was blocked from loading". There may be circumstances where software products in addition to McAfee require approval.

Managed Endpoint Protection Service

Strict version of VirusScan 8.8

The second version of Enterprise 8.8 (available below) is preconfigured with very strict rules that may prevent you from installing or running some programs, please make sure you only use this version if you are aware of the possible consequences.

  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 (pre-configured, contains patch 7 for VirusScan - will install on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows). Please note: In order to prevent cryptolocker (and other similar malware) this configuration will prevent programs that use appdata/local or appdata/roaming from runnning or installing. If problems occur while trying to install software, temporarily turn off Access Protection.
