General Information Regarding Printing in the Department

Do's and Don't's

  • Make sure that you have more than one printer installed in your machine. If you do have problem with one printer, please report it and try to print to the other communal printers.
  • If they are no papers in any of the printers, please get them from the Store in Level 1. Note that papers should be only used Department's printers and not elsewhere i.e. lab printers.
  • Make sure you select the correct printer and do not print to Research Lab printers unless you have explicit permission from the Research Lab Leader (UTO).
  • Printing in the Department is a privileged and should not be abused. Do not print any inappropriate material.
  • DO NOT print pdf files direct from web browsers as this can slow down the print queue (save to your local machine then print).
  • Acetates - Please exercise caution when using acetates in the departmental printers, especially the hpcolour printer. Acetates can easily melt in the fuser unit of the printers, if this happens a new fuser unit is required normally costing over £150. Only the following Acetates should be used:

Impega Monochrome Laser Printer Transpareny Film for the mono hp printers
HP Color LaserJet Transparency Film (C2936A) for the hpcolour printer

Both can be obtained from stores, but please make sure you get the right type for the printer you want to use.
  • Think before you print, collect all of your printouts

Printer Maintenance

Please look after the printers and try to keep the printer areas free from clutter. If the printer jams while you are using it please try to clear it if possible. If not please contact IT Helpdesk for assistance.

Printing credit will be reset at the beginning of August

    Poster Printing

The largest size we can print in house is A3. Printing jobs will be done on normal paper unless alternative paper is supplied.

If you require printing to be undertaken by departmental IT staff please make sure you supply the digital files at least 4 working days before your deadline. This is particularly important if you require printing for presentation posters to take to conferences.

Other departments that offer reprographics services are:

    Acetate Printing

If you need to produce colour acetates you must use only HP Colour Transparencies (Code: C2936A) with the HP 4550 Colour LaserJet printer. DO NOT use any other transparency media as they melt in the fuser unit resulting in costly repairs.
