Dr Alecia-Jane Twigger holding The Sunday Times physical article copy
Dr Alecia-Jane Twigger, Group Leader at the Department of Pharmacology and the Department of Biochemistry, and the Cambridge Lactation Lab have been featured in The Times Online and The Sunday Times.
The article “Why is breastfeeding so hard? Biology might finally have the answer”, written by Melissa Denes, is a deep dive into breastfeeding and lactation research. It features six experts in the field, with a prominent section of the article focused on the contributions of Dr Twigger’s Cambridge Lactation Lab.
Dr Twigger commented: “I am incredibly grateful to be part of such a supportive department both scientifically and practically. Going on maternity leave has been the ultimate sabbatical for my research and has highlighted what a challenge breastfeeding is, both physically and mentally. I have been privileged to have a very positive breastfeeding experience, bolstered by the University's maternity leave policy and our Roving Researcher Nadine Anders, which enabled me to have protected time to focus on my baby and know my research group was well looked after.
I am so proud of the research we do in the Cambridge Lactation Lab, with an outstanding team - currently composed of Dr Gabrielle Oxley, Dr Antinéa Ravet, Emma Farquhar, Suzanne Smith and Jess Walsh - who work tirelessly to run our Cambridgeshire Multiomics of Milk (CAMB MOM) study to drive the research forward (see our website to learn more). I now know firsthand the incredible gift our participants provide in donating to our study, without which this research wouldn’t be possible.
We are also lucky to have incredible colleagues who participate in the Cambridge Lactation Network, providing new ideas and approaches to uncover the biology of human lactation and identify strategies to improve breastfeeding rates."
