Dr Janet Kumita has been awarded an MRC Career Development Award for her project entitled “Establishing a structure-function relationship between biomolecular condensates and protein degradation”. She will use a multidisciplinary approach to study how nature utilises liquid-liquid phase separation to promote autophagy – the cell’s waste disposal machinery. Using protein engineering to create novel biomolecular condensates, we will systematically study condensate features that promote protein degradation within the cell. This will allow us to exploit protein homeostasis pathways to drive the removal of disease-causing proteins, such as those related to neurodegenerative diseases.
