Department of Pharmacology

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Robert Henderson. He died peacefully at home on Sunday the 10th of December after a short illness.

Robert obtained his first degree from Queen Mary University of London and his PhD from the London Hospital Medical College. He spent four years at Yale University as a postdoctoral research associate and then joined the Department of Pharmacology at Cambridge in 1988 to work on ion-transporting epithelia as a postdoctoral researcher, being appointed to a Lectureship in Pharmacology in 1992, and later making a radical move into atomic force microscopy. Robert held multiple positions across the University, including serving on the COVID 'Gold' Committee, and was a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was Senior Tutor from 2011 until 2023.

A Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society, Robert was a devoted member of the Department, leading our staff on all aspects of undergraduate teaching and delivering across the curriculum to Medicine/Veterinary Medicine and Natural Sciences students. He was a popular teacher, able to make even the most complicated concepts accessible and interesting, and a committed colleague, known for his witty anecdotes and steadfast loyalty to the Department and his College. His deep knowledge and calm nature were greatly valued by all who knew him.

He will be greatly missed and long remembered.
