Department of Pharmacology

In 2024, the Department took part in the Aspiring Scientist Training Programme for the first time. The Programme was run by the Gurdon Institute and is targeted at young people from disadvantaged backgrounds or who have barriers to education, encouraging and enabling them to apply to university. For the 2024 cohort, students were hosted in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit, Institute of Metabolic Science, the Sainsbury Laboratory, Pharmacology, and MRC Toxicology Unit, with a total of over 30 students taking part.

The Department hosted 5 students across 5 different research groups for a week. In these labs, the students were introduced to research techniques and the research environment within universities. They also attended a variety of workshops, talks, and demonstrations, and, while staying in St. Catharine’s or Pembroke College, they got to sample student life. At the end of the week, they presented their lab work to fellow students and lab members from all the host labs alongside MRC Toxicology Unit students.
